Another savior for nostalgia or another fad awaiting its uncertain fate? Only time will tell when this new channel proves its worth for us viewers. |
Greetings Toonsters!
Thought I drop by and tell about a new channel that is coming to fruition this June. It is call MeTV Toons. They say it is the second coming of Cartoon Network/Boomerang. But I am getting ahead of myself. So before I talk about this channel in question, let's talk about a little history of the very channel this one new venture spawned from.
MeTV, which is acronym for Memorable Entertainment Television, was launched on January 6th, 2003. Like Nick @ Nite before it, this up and rising network showed classic TV shows from the 1930s all the way to the 1990s. Yes, this network had our favorite shows, no matter what decade it came from. It could be classic sitcoms like Leave It to Beaver, Hogan's Heroes, Green Acres, The Brady Bunch, Happy Days and Full House, dramas like Perry Mason, Dragnet, In The Heat of the Night, comedy shows like The Carol Burnett Show or classic action adventure shows like 60s Batman, Star Trek, Buck Rogers and even The Incredible Hulk. Heck, even there was Saturday Movie feature block, hosted by Svengoolie, but most of the movies were Science-Fiction and/or horror movies. Unfortunately, we can only watch this channel through either regular cable, DirecTV or having a digital antenna (if you can find some space for a stronger signal).
But, I am getting ahead of myself, but the question is, what does MeTV have to do with cartoons. Good question. Here is the abridged version of the answer. Fast forward to 2021, MeTV gave us a cartoon block called Toon In with Me. First airing as a sneak preview on January 1st, and then becoming a regular show 3 days later, this block showed classic cartoons of yesteryear, the Golden Age of Animation to be precise. From those of Looney Tunes, to those of MGM like Tom & Jerry and Droopy, to Popeye and Betty Boop, and yes, even those of the Walter Lantz variety, including Woody Woodpecker. The block was so popular, and after 4 seasons (and still going strong), it was announced on May 2nd, 2024, that they are releasing a new 24/7 channel called MeTV Toons. Since the demise of The Hub Network on 2014, we long for a channel that we can enjoy, without all the backstage politics and so forth. This channel not only will air the classic cartoons from the Toon In with Me block, but it will always air other cartoons like Inspector Gadget, The Mask and even classic animes like Marine Boy and Speed Racer. The people who green lit this ensured us that the only original content on this channel is documentaries on the cartoons in question and its history and background and so forth. From experience, I have to be skeptical about this. I don't want be disappointed soon after I enjoyed it after a few years. But this is a need to know process, but I am hopeful this channel goes through. Even though I will use a digital antenna to get this channel one day, I hope they will put this in digital streaming services and we can watch it through wholeheartedly. Here's to hoping. MeTV Toons will be released on June 25th, 2024. I will leave you with the list of shows that will air on this new channel. Until next time, stay frosty.
Saraba da (Farewell), for now!

I hope they won't make the same mistakes that Cartoon Network and Boomerang made.
Also, fingers crossed for a Retro Action Cartoon block on this New Network.
Or a Network with Action Cartoons by MeTV's Sister Network, Heroes and Icons.
Well, they said they aren't going to put original content on it aside from the documentary type programs on the cartoons and/or their history. And I do hope for a block or two on a specific genre of cartoons like the aforementioned action types. But only time will tell. Fingers crossed, indeed.
